this fast-growing crime has cost its victims over $475 million a year. Identity
Theft is when your personal information is stolen and used to make unauthorized
financial transactions, often in checking, savings, and credit card accounts.

Ways to Protect Yourself from Identity Theft
Do not write or give your ATM/Debit card PIN number to anyone.
Never give out your personal financial information such as SSN, checking
account or credit card account numbers through the mail, telephone or Internet
unless you initiated the contact and you are certain the company or individual
Immediately report any lost or stolen Debit/ATM, credit cards or personal
checks to the bank.
Shred any bank statements, charge receipts, old checks, bank statements
or financial solicitations before throwing them away.
Examine your credit card, debit card and bank statements immediately when
you receive them to determine if there are any unauthorized transactions.
Report any findings immediately.
Safeguard your passwords to internet banking and change them every 90 days.
Your PIN numbers and passwords should never be easy to guess (such as street
addresses, birthdates, and pets’ names)
Avoid email scams such as “Phishing”
“Phishing” is the use of fraudulent emails and websites designed to fool
recipients into divulging personal financial information such as credit
card numbers, account usernames and passwords and social security numbers.

card companies, “phishers” are able to convince recipients to respond to
If you ever receive an email or a letter from the bank asking for any personal
information, do not answer it as it could be a hoax. Please contact your
banking representative to verify the authenticity of the request before
To prevent falling victim to Phishing:
Even though the letter or email may contain the bank’s logo, be suspicious
and do not give your any confidential information until you have confirmed
the legitimacy of the request. Report any suspicious emails or letters to
the bank so the bank may investigate.
If you suspect the message may not be authentic, do not use the link provided
in the email to get to a web-page. Call the company or go directly to their
website by typing in the address in your web browser.
Ensure the security of the website. Make sure you do not enter any personal
information on a non-secure website. The website will have a “s” in the
websites address https:// if it is secure.
If you do not recognize an email sender DO NOT OPEN THE EMAIL just delete
it, as it may have a virus attached that will automatically download if
the email is opened.
